Backpack Fitting Tips from Uptown Chiropractic

Now that school is back in session, backpacks become a necessity for students of all ages. Every item that we pack in them from textbooks, water bottles, laptops, and lunches can quickly add weight. Here are our top tips for purchasing the right backpack and wearing it best!

Choose one that’s right!

Look for a bag with wide padded shoulder straps, a padded back, and a waist strap to evenly distribute the weight through your back and hips and reduce the stress put directly on your shoulders.

Pack it light!

It’s important to not overload your backpack with nonessential items. If you’re in Grades JK-8 it is recommended to keep the weight below 10% of your body weight, older students can carry up to 15% of their body weight.

Wear it right!

When carrying your backpack, wear both straps and adjust them so that the backpack fits snugly – you should be able to slide your hand between the backpack and your back. Wearing your backpack too low can cause you to lean forward when you walk, putting more weight on your upper back.
