Mount Pleasant Village has always been steadfast in difficult times. When Mount Pleasant Road stretched out to connect the community with the rest of the city, World War One was raging. A few years later, as a few stores began to pop up along the main street, the Spanish Flu was sweeping Toronto. In the 1930’s, Mount Pleasant had grown to become a vibrant shopping district. However, the Great Depression made it an extremely difficult period, both for business owners and for shoppers. Throughout the 20th century, Mount Pleasant has grown and thrived despite trying circumstances.
When COVID-19 arrived, the future of Mount Pleasant Village was once again uncertain. What would happen to this close-knit business community if no one could safely shop? Thankfully, business owners were able to pivot, many offering online shopping services and curbside pickup. While beloved community events, like Harvest Fair, had to be put on hold, the community stayed strong. Guidelines, recommendations, and information constantly evolved. Eventually, shop owners were able to greet customers again. Harvest Fair returned. Once again, we could meet our neighbours for a coffee at At Origin.
