Do you want the good news or the bad news first?
Alright – the bad. It’s January and we’re smack dab in the middle of winter. Blue Monday is behind us, but plenty more chilly weather lies ahead.
The good news? Our special neighbourhood of Mount Pleasant Village offers some incredible experiences you may not know about. Experiences to help you forget the days are shorter and the skies are grey. Opportunities to try or learn something brand new. Occasions to call up a friend and get out of the house for some fun.
So read on, find something that appeals to you, then get out there and give it a shot. We can almost guarantee you’ll wonder why you hadn’t sooner!
Get Creative
Sometimes it takes a little courage to try out a new creative pursuit, but you just need to get started. Try your hand at pottery and ceramic art at Creative Clay Studio. Welcoming to new beginners and clay devotees alike, this is an inclusive space to create. Hone your skill with self-directed practice or sign up for a class and enjoy instruction adapted to your skill level.
Did you know you can try the unique art form of mosaics in Mount Pleasant Village? At Origin Coffee holds mosaic workshops, guiding you to create your own one of a kind piece and express yourself through art. How cool is that?
Get Moving
They say movement is a great way to beat the winter blues, but sometimes it’s harder said than done. Thankfully, we have Studio RIO Integrated Pilates – a new business offering private sessions, semi-private sessions and small mat group classes, offered in person as well as online. Their approach is Pilates based on the principles of movement education and biomechanics. And the experience will have you walking away feeling strong, revitalised and happy.
If you’ve got little ones, don’t miss Happy Feet Dance & Fitness; an amazing place where kids of all ages can get moving. Their specialized programs make the fundamental techniques of a quality dance education fun and engaging. Winter registrations are open!
Get Eating & Drinking
You know by now Mount Pleasant Village has some extraordinary dining options (lucky us!) But what you may not know is there are some special spots to visit where you’ll experience more than a tasty meal.
Smoke Show BBQ & Brew is one of them. Dig into mouth watering BBQ in an elevated pub setting then stick around for live music and make it a night. Located in the iconic 1970’s Chicken Deli, it’s impossible not to have fun here.
Owners Nicole and John Ciampini have created a true destination. ‘We really want to offer something for every age. It’s a local neighbourhood hangout,’ says Nicole. ‘Kids are welcome, moms with strollers feel welcome here, and every weekend we cater to the 65+ crowd during the day with our 3PM-6PM matinee live music shows,” she says. Live music ranges from dixie to jazz – but no matter the melody, you’ll want to check this place out. Check out their website for upcoming shows.
Perhaps you enjoy the coziness of preparing food at home during the winter – but you could use some help cooking up meal inspiration or brushing up on your culinary skills. Book a session with The Chef Upstairs and experience an intimate, unique and interactive dining experience. With the help of a talented chef you’ll prepare a meal with fresh, local, ingredients, learn to pair it with wine and gain the skills to recreate the meal at home. Yum!
Get Pampered
Nothing gets you out of a winter funk quite like some devoted ‘unwind time’. An appointment to get pampered gives you something to look forward to, and once the occasion rolls around you escape reality. Book in at Elly & Amar Studio and you’ll see what we mean.
‘You are welcomed into our treatment rooms that transport you out of the cold, gloomy winter into a cozy, dimly lit, tropical paradise,’ says founder and owner Alyssa Antonio. ‘Our estheticians provide an in-depth relaxing skin treatment and the shoulder, neck and scalp massages are an amazing plus.’’ In addition to a range of skin and facial treatments, Elly & Amar Studio also offers nail services, brow and lashes services, hair removal, and make-up and hair. Sign us up!
